Gérald André, BSc, MEng, PhD

Gérald André has 25 years of experience in the life science industry, covering the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors. He is a seasoned executive who has been involved in many aspects of this industry: R&D, technology transfer, venture capital, business development and funding start-up companies and joint ventures. He has played a key role in setting up and developing several innovative companies in the life science sector.

Gérald André has been trained as a biochemical engineer and spent the first part of his career in R&D in industry, in academia (École Polytechnique de Montréal, University of Ottawa) and at the National Research Council of Canada where he played a key role in building the bioprocess engineering and environmental engineering sectors of the Montreal Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI).

His professional experience and achievements include the following:

  • As founder and president of VIE-Tech Consultants, he has run a management consultancy firm specialized in technology assessment and strategic planning related to bioenergy, biotechnology and biopharmaceutics.
  • He is currently chairing the technico-economic assessment committee of the CRIBIQ, a R&D consortium devoted to the development of novel bioproducts and bioprocess technologies.
  • As vice-president, corporate development at Theratechnologies (TSX: TH), he was involved in key strategic areas (alliance with Bachem for the long term supply of therapeutic peptides, negotiation of a collaboration and license agreement with Johnson & Johnson, intellectual property management). He also supervised the following groups: market research and commercialization, legal services, business development and licensing. He has represented Theratechnologies on the Board of Directors of two spin-off companies: Celmed Biosciences, now part of Kiadis Pharma B.V. (NL), and Andromed (now part of Masimo Corp., NASDAQ: MASI).
  • As vice-president of SGF Santé, he developed its first investment plan in the Life Science and Healthcare sector and subsequently, recommended funding 10 projects/companies totaling more than 100 M$ (including DSM Biologics, Draxis Pharma (TSE: DAX), RTP Pharma (now part of Skye Pharma plc, LSE: SKP), Andromed, Theratechnologies, Celmed Biosciences).
  • At the beginning of his carreer, he worked for different investors (BioCapital L.P., Innovatech Grand Montréal and Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec) where he evaluated and recommended investments in several companies prior to their IPOs (Haemacure, Cryocath, Labopharm, Methylgene, BioCryst, Axcan Pharma).

Gérald André is actively involved in the following areas: product, technology and market evaluation, due diligence, strategic planning and business plan development, financing, due diligence and interim management.
